Understanding Tokenization in X-1FBO

What tokenization means for your saved cards and processors

Securely handling card payments 💳🔒

When handling sensitive payment information, security is the top priority. That’s why X-1FBO uses tokenization — a process that protects credit card data without storing the actual card numbers. Instead, a unique “token” is created that represents the card, keeping transactions secure while still allowing you to save cards for future use.

What is Tokenization?

Instead of storing actual credit card numbers, X-1 converts them into a secure “token.”

  • A token is a random string of characters that represents the card.

  • This token can be safely stored in the system and used for future transactions.

  • The real card number is never exposed or stored in X-1.

This means your customers’ payment information stays secure and PCI-compliant while you can still quickly process repeat transactions.

Why Tokenization Matters

With tokenization, the real card number never lives in the system. This means:

  • Less risk of exposing sensitive data 🛡️

  • Faster, safer transactions

  • Peace of mind for both you and your customers

When Cards On-File Need to Be Replaced 🔄

Because tokens are tied to very specific details, there are times when saved cards can’t carry over. In these cases, cards must be removed and re-entered so a new token can be created.

Here are the most common situations:

1. Switching Processors

If your FBO switches to a new payment processor, all saved cards need to be re-entered. Tokens cannot transfer between processors since each processor issues its own unique tokens.

2. Card Information Changes

If any card details are updated (such as expiration date, billing zip code, or other key information), the old token becomes invalid. The card must be removed and re-entered to generate a new token.

3. Processing Credential Changes

If your merchant processing credentials are updated (for example, new login/API keys provided by your processor), previously saved tokens will no longer work. Cards must be re-entered under the new credentials.

Common Error Message You May See ⚠️

If there’s ever an issue with a saved card token, you may see the following message in X-1:

Business Rules Error-2950:
“Unable to Retrieve COF token Details. Please verify that token exists.”

👉 This usually means the token is invalid or missing. The fix is simple: re-enter the card details so a new token can be created.

Key Takeaway ✨

Tokenization keeps credit card data secure while making transactions simple. Just remember: whenever processors, credentials, or card details change, cards need to be re-entered to generate fresh tokens.
